After a close first quarter, Friday Harbor exploded for a 53-7 win over the visiting Coupeville High School football team Friday, Sept. 20.
The Wolverines, leading only 14-7 after the opening period, scored 39 points in the second and third quarters to roll to the non-league win.
Coupeville (1-2) will look to bounce back when it hosts La Conner at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27. The Braves picked up their first win Friday, running by Chimacum 30-12.
Not much went right offensively for Coupeville at Friday Harbor, as the Wolves registered less than 100 yards of total offense in the game, and most of that came in their one scoring drive.
Friday Harbor led 14-0 in the first quarter when Scott Hilborn and Sean Toomey-Stout caught passes from Dawson Houston for 25 and 19 yards, setting up an 8-yard catch by Gavin Knoblich for the score. Daylon Houston kicked the PAT, and the Wolves were momentarily back in the game.
The Wolverines quickly countered with a score and were never threatened from that point.
Dawson Houston finished with five completions for 79 yards to lead the Wolves.
“If was a tough outing for our young team,” coach Marcus Carr said. “Friday Harbor has a good, physical football team and we just couldn’t match their physicality Friday evening.”
While the defense “missed a lot of tackles,” according to Carr, Ben Smith did provide one defensive highlight, picking off a Friday Harbor pass.
“We are still working hard and we will focus on getting better and bringing home a victory this week against La Conner,” Carr said.
