Coupeville drops series opener / Baseball

It was a bad matchup for the Coupeville High School baseball team.

The Wolves, whose offense has been stuck in the mud all season, had to face the talented South Whidbey pitching staff, authors of three no-hitters, in a North Sound Conference game Monday, April 8.

The result was a predictable 12-0 loss to the visiting Falcons.

The teams play two more times this week at 4 p.m. — Wednesday in Langley and Friday back in Coupeville.

The Wolves produced only two base runners in the game on singles by Dane Lucero and Gavin Knoblich, as Ethan Petty pitched a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts and no walks.

The Falcon offense is also tough, and South Whidbey rapped 13 hits in the game.

Lucero pitched the first five innings for Coupeville and threw well but didn’t get much help from his offense or defense. He left the game trailing 7-0, but four of the runs were unearned and another the result of an infield hit.

Coupeville remains winless (0-7, 0-11) with the loss, while South Whidbey (9-1, 12-1) moved to within a half game of the league lead.
