The Coupeville High School softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Saturday, March 30, in Port Angeles.
Playing two talented teams, the Wolves fell 17-1 to Fife in five innings and 8-4 to Forks.
Coupeville (2-2, 4-5) is now off for spring break and then will return to conference play when it hosts South Whidbey (0-1, 2-3) at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 9.
Fife 17, Coupeville 1
“Fife hit the ball all over the field,” Coupeville coach Kevin McGranahan said. “We played pretty good defense, they just hit all the gaps.”
The Trojans, who average 15 runs per game, upped their record to 6-1.
The Wolves had only three hits, but one was a big one — Sarah Wright blasted a home run in the fifth inning. Emma Mathusek and Veronica Crownover added singles.
Fife scored eight runs in the second inning and seven in the fourth to put the game away.
Forks 8, Coupeville 4
Although the Wolves lost, they made it tough on the Spartans, who beat Coupeville 12-0 twice last spring.
A walk, error and two hits helped Forks (4-2) score three runs in the first inning.
Coupeville got one back in their half. Mathusek walked, Chelsea Prescott singled and then Wright doubled.
The Wolves scored twice in the third inning to tie the game. Audrianna Shaw walked, Nicole Laxton was hit by a pitch and Scout Smith singled to fuel inning.
Fife scored five runs over the next four innings, but Coupeville countered with only one.
The Wolves scored in the fifth on singles by Mathusek and Wright.
Wright finished with a double and single, and Smith, Mathusek, Prescott and Shaw all added base hits.
