Wolves’ win sets up 1st-place showdown / Baseball

A 3-1 win by over visiting Klahowya by the Coupeville High School baseball team Friday, April 20, set up today’s battle for first place in the Olympic League.

The Wolves (3-1, 9-4) host Chimacum (4-0, 6-6) at 4 p.m. Monday, April 23, in a game that will play a big role in what club claims the conference crown.

Chimacum defeated Coupeville 5-4 April 11 in their first meeting. The winner of their three-game series is likely to be the league champions.

The third meeting is Friday, April 27, in Coupeville.

The Wolves go to Port Townsend (1-3, 1-8) at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Coupeville 3, Klahowya 1

The game featured a pitching duel between Coupeville’s Hunter Smith and Klahowya’s Tanyr Gagnon and Logan Prater.

Smith pitched a complete-game two-hitter, striking out 11 and walking none.

Gagnon tossed the first five innings and allowed only three hits, but he did walk eight.

The Wolves scored a run in the bottom of the second when Jake Hoagland walked, moved around to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored on Kyle Rockwell’s base hit.

The Eagles tied it in the fourth when they registered their only two hits. Gagnon singled, Nathen Mjor doubled and Gagnon scored on a ground out. Those two hits were also the Eagles’ only base runners in the game.

Coupeville won it in the fifth. Gavin Knoblich walked and was bunted to second by Matt Hilborn. After an out, Smith walked. Julian Wellings doubled in both runners.

Joey Lippo’s single in the third inning was Coupeville’s only other hit.
