Eagles nip Oak Harbor in extra innings / Softball

A tough year became a little harder to take for the Oak Harbor High School softball team as it lost a 4-3 extra-inning heartbreaker Friday, April 28, in Arlington.

With the score tied at 3 after four innings, the Wildcats put runners in scoring position in each following frame but couldn’t come up with a clutch base hit.

Despite the loss, Oak Harbor coach Tashina Tosh was pleased with the play of her club.

“It was a great game,” she said. “All the girls did well.”

Brooke Gilham provided two of the brightest highlights, according to Tosh. The Wildcat third baseman went 4-for-4 at the plate, including slashing a triple, and recorded an unassisted double play.

Cierra LeGendre followed Gilham’s triple with a base hit to give Oak Harbor a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Arlington (5-9, 5-11) scored twice in the second to take the lead, then Oak Harbor jumped ahead with two runs in the fourth.

Howard started the fourth with a single, moved up on an error off the bat of Miranda Wilson and scored on Megan Flood’s ground out. Miranda Wilson scored on Taylor Wilson’s single.

Arlington scored once in the bottom of the fourth to even the game at 3, then neither team scored again until the Eagles’ winner in the eighth.

Flood finished the game with a double and single, and Howard added two singles. LeGendre, Halle Carpenter and Taylor Wilson also collected hits.

Oak Harbor’s (1-13, 1-15) game with Marysville Getchell scheduled for Monday, May 1, was rained out and rescheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, May 6, in Oak Harbor.

Oak Harbor plays Snohomish (14-0, 15-1) at home at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 3.
