Sequim couldn’t seem to miss and the host Coupeville High School boys basketball team couldn’t seem to make a hoop in Sequim’s 72-33 non-league win Monday, Jan. 30.
The two teams will meet again at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, in Sequim (3-15), then Coupeville (3-5, 3-14) finishes the regular season with an Olympic League contest at first-place Port Townsend (7-0, 3-13) at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb 4.
In a battle of teams that share the nickname Wolves, Sequim came out on fire and Coupeville saw good looks rim out as the winners raced to a 21-6 first-quarter lead. The trend continued all night.
The visiting Wolves led 35-15 at halftime and 56-27 after three quarters.
Sequim helped its cause with relentless offensive rebounding, timely backdoor cuts and an effective fast break.
Payton Glasser led the Sequim charge, scoring 23 points (12 in the first period) before exiting the game with the other starters half way through the third quarter.
All 11 Sequim players scored.
Hunter Smith, who averaged 30 points over the past two games, topped Coupeville with 12. Brain Shank scored 8, Ethan Spark 7, Gabe Wynn 2, Steven Cope 2 and Cameron Toomey-Stout 2.
The loss snapped Coupeville’s two-game winning streak.
“We weren’t ready to play,” coach Anthony Smith said, “but give them (Sequim) credit; they are a disciplined team.”
Smith said his club “did everything right” in the previous two games and “needs that effort every time we take the floor.”
One bright spot in the Sequim game, he said, was Toomey-Stout, who “battled all of the game.”
