The streak is broken!
The normal water temperature at Vanderzicht Pool is 82 degrees, but the Oak Harbor girls swimming team may have ratcheted the temperature a few degrees higher on Thursday blistering the waters to a 113-60 victory over Mariner.
The win snapped a year-long losing streak and the Lady Wildcats are eagerly anticipating taking on any and all opponents for the rest of the season.
“The girls are really excited about getting their first win in over a year,†coach Erika Miller said. “They are really pumped up. They didn’t win a single meet all last year and this breaks their losing streak. They can’t wait for the next meet.â€
Senior co-captain Julia Marriott led the way winning the 100 butterfly and the 100 breaststroke.
“Julia’s time in the 100 breastsroke was fast enough to qualify for the state meet,†Miller said.
Also winning for Oak Harbor was senior diver Chelsea Tow.
“Chelsea is a first-year diver,†Miller said. “She has been swimming all along and decided to try out. She’s been doing really well.â€
Other winners were senior co-captain Meg Gill in the 100 freestyle and Sherrianne Wright in the 200 individual medley.
“It was pretty awesome winning,†Gill said after being stopped in the middle of her six-lap warm-up run. “We’re ecstatic.â€
“We have a number of girls on this team that compete in two or three different sports,†Miller said. “There is a lot of athleticism on this team.â€
Also in her first varsity meet, freshman Maddie Shipley was the winner of the 500 freestyle.
Oak Harbor hosted Stanwood on Tuesday.
The results of that meet will appear in the Sept. 16 issue of the Whidbey News-Times.
