Defense helps Sedro-Woolley defeat Oak Harbor / Boys basketball

Sedro-Woolley took control of the game early, limiting the Oak Harbor High School boys basketball team to three first-half field goals on the way to a 55-29 win on the Wildcats’ court Friday, Dec. 9.

The Cubs zipped to an 18-6 first-quarter lead and pushed the advantage to 30-10 at halftime.

Sedro-Woolley sank three three-pointers and nine free throws as it built its big lead.

“Their pressure defense got the best of us,” Oak Harbor coach John Weston said. “They are a good team that has a lot of size — three players listed at 6-4 and another at 6-2. Their length affected our shots and helped them do well on the offensive glass.”

The Wildcats held their own in the third quarter when both clubs tallied 10 points.

“I was happy with our defense for the most part,” Weston said. “We slowed down their two leading scorers and held the team to about seven under their average.

“We will go back to work at practice on Monday and work on some things they exploited.”

Nine different Wildcats scored, but none hit for more than Adam Nelson’s 6 points. Joe Arinaza had 5, Weston Whitefoot 4, Ozell Jackson 4, Gabe Salinger 3, Justin Ellison 2, JJ Mitchell 2, Gavin Allen 2 and Haven Brown 1.

Si DeJong led the Cubs with 15 points.

Oak Harbor’s game with Meridian scheduled for Saturday was postponed because of weather. No makeup date has been set.

Oak Harbor (1-4) now heads into conference play when Lynnwood (1-4) visits at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13.
