An arsonist on Whidbey marred an otherwise perfect night for some Barack Obama supporters.
Coupeville resident Rob Harbour was driving back from an election night party when he was stunned to see a large Obama sign in flames at the corner of Highway 20 and Arnold Road.
“We were all so high and charged up in this incredible victory when we saw this thing,” he said. “It left a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach.”
Island County Sheriff Mark Brown said deputies responded to the fire, but didn’t see anyone or find any evidence. He said the crime would be classified as malicious mischief.
“It would be a stretch to call it a hate crime without knowing the person’s motivation,” he said.
Judy Lynn, the owner of the land, was gone at the time of the fire. She was upset about the vandalism, but didn’t let it spoil the election for her.
“It’s sad that someone could be so filled with hate and rage that they felt the need to act out,” she said.
