Thwarted by several offsides calls, the Coupeville girls soccer team lost 3-2 at Sultan Thursday, Oct. 21.

The Wolves had three scoring opportunities wiped out by being offsides, according to coach Mike Thornton. In spite of the misfortune, Thornton said his club has several other chances to score but couldn’t put in the equalizer.

Thornton called the officiating “interesting” and “odd,” but his players performed well, especially in the second half.

Down 1-0 at the half, the Wolves knotted the score on Amanda Montana’s goal in the second half. The Turks (2-11, 2-13) scored again, then Amanda d’Almeida tied it once again with a penalty kick.

With about 10 minutes left in the contest, Sultan tipped in the game winner.

Coupeville (2-11, 4-11) hosts first place Lakewood (13-0, 14-0-1) Saturday at 2 p.m. in the regular season finale, then starts playoffs next Wednesday.

Thornton said, “We are playing better; we look hungry for district.”
