Wildcats win Gillies awards

Oak Harbor High School seniors Clair Thiel and Chris Valencia are this year’s recipients of the Cliff Gillies Student Award for academic achievement, sportsmanship and citizenship.

Named in honor of Gillies, who began his career in the 1950s as a coach at Monroe High School, before moving on to Snohomish High School in 1963 where he was high school principal before taking the principal’s job at Mariner High School in 1968.

He was also a member of the Northwest District One Executive Board for a number of years and served as board president. In addition, he was a member of the WIAA Representative Assembly and later became executive director of the association.

Every year, the award is presented to two seniors at each high school within the Northwest District honoring them for their achievements in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the community.

Thiel, a WesCo North all-star in volleyball and basketball, will be attending Concordia University in Portland in the fall on a volleyball scholarship

Valencia, who was an all-league selection in football and baseball, said he is going to Skagit Valley College in Oak Harbor to obtain his two-year transfer degree and then plans on attending a four-year-school.

Flavin plays in all-star game

Kevin Flavin, a junior at Oak Harbor High School and a first-team WesCo North soccer all-star, has been selected as a member of the north team to play in the Second Annual Soccer All Star Soccer game between WesCo North and WesCo South all-conference teams.

The game will be played at Shoreline Stadium on Tuesday, June 10.

Kickoff is set for at 8 p.m.
