The Oak Harbor doubles team of Lauren Rico and Clarissa Abadesco finished third in the Northwest District tournament Thursday, May 20, at Jackson and qualified for the state tournament next weekend in the Tri-Cities.
Wednesday, the Oak Harbor pair won their first match 6-2, 6-0 over Mariner, and then dropped their second 2-6, 0-6 to the eventual champions Amanda Waldron and Michelle Nelson of Edmonds-Woodway.
In the consolation bracket Thursday, Rico and Abadesco started by topping a team from Stanwood 6-4, 6-3. That placed them in a winner-to-state, loser-out match with Snohomish’s Julie Winston and Brielle Nicholas. The Snohomish pair defeated the Oak Harbor duo last week for the Wesco North divisional title.
This time, the Wildcats won 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4.
Oak Harbor’s other two entries at district, singles players Erin Neilon and Cady O’Dell, dropped both their matches Wednesday and were eliminated.
Neilon lost to Edmonds-Woodway’s Jane Hong 2-6, 6-3, 2-6 and Kamiak’s Alyssa Gilbert 2-6, 4-6.
O’Dell was defeated by Mackenzie Bang of Shorewood 6-7(3), 2-6 and Annie Yank of Kamiak 2-6, 4-6.
