Nine children onboard Oak Harbor School District Bus No. 201 were unharmed after bus driver Larry Hanson clipped the bumper of a silver Hyundai Accent in the Children’s Academy parking lot on Fort Nugent Road in Oak Harbor.
“He cut the corner sharper than normal,” said Oak Harbor Police Officer Jennifer Rutledge.
Washington State Patrol arrived on scene and determined the bus did not sustain any structural damage, but that the rear passenger side tire was no longer sound.
The tire was replaced the next day, said Oak Harbor School District Transportation Director Francis Bagarella.
“Accidents don’t happen very often. The yellow busses are the most secure on the road,” he said. “but it does happen.”
Bagarella said the driver has a good record with the school district.
