Kusnick, Southard qualify for district | Tennis

Oak Harbor seniors David Kusnick and Will Southard placed third and fourth in the Wesco 3A North singles tennis tournament at Stanwood this week to earn district tournament berths.

The top four finishers at the divisional tournament qualified for he four-day district playoffs which begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in Stanwood.

Kusnick, the No. 4 seed, opened the divisional meet with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Marysville Getchell’s Ryan Clausen, the No. 5 seed, Tuesday, Oct. 16. Wednesday he lost to No. 1 seed and eventual champion Jonathan Wolfe of Stanwood 6-0, 6-0.

That dropped him into the match for third and fourth with teammate Southard. Kusnick won 7-5, 7-6(3).

Southard, the No. 2 seed, defeated Ferndale’s Nate Fallis, the No. 10 seed, 6-4, 6-4 Tuesday, then lost to No. 3 seed Ulises Aceves of Everett 6-0, 6-2 Wednesday.

In doubles action Tuesday, No. 5 seed Carter Saar and Harrison Miller won a loser-out match with Owin Ell and Kris Davies of Marysville-Pilchuck 6-1, 6-0 to reach the quarter finals. There they fell to No. 4 seed Ben Rumsey and CJ Gonzales of Marysville Getchell 6-0, 6-4. Wednesday they were eliminated by No. 8 seed Cal Knapp and Hayden Smith of Everett 6-2, 6-0.

No. 10 seed Casiano Atienza and Antonio Unpingco lost to No. 7 seed Zach Wiederstrom and Tristan Hasseler of Marysville Getchell 6-1, 6-1 Tuesday in the play-in round and were eliminated.

Oak Harbor’s two doubles teams were the only ones which did not have at least one senior. Five of the 12 teams featured two seniors. Miller, Atienza and Unpingco are juniors, Saar a sophomore.
