Soccer: Wolves lose another close match

Don’t believe its 3-7 league record, Coupeville has one of the Cascade Conference’s best soccer teams. Ask King’s.

Don’t believe its 3-7 league record, Coupeville has one of the Cascade Conference’s best soccer teams.

Ask King’s.

The first-place Knights are 10-1 and had all they could

handle from the Wolves in a 1-0 win at Mickey Clark Field Tuesday, April 19.

Earlier in the season, King’s had an even tougher time with

Coupeville, edging the Wolves in a shootout.

Although Coupeville sits tied for sixth in the eight-team

league, they have played nearly everyone tough. Five of the seven losses have

been by one goal, and two of those losses were in shootouts.

Even after another heart-wrenching loss to King’s,

Coupeville coach Paul Mendes liked his team’s effort: “It was a good overall

performance. We knew we had to play good team defense to stay with them, and we

did. They scored on a superbly taken free kick that no goalkeeper could have

stopped.

“We came close to scoring a number of times, with some of

our best chances coming in the closing minutes. King’s is a very good team and

we played with them right to the end.”

The Wolves (4-7-1, 3-7) head to South Whidbey (7-5, 5-5) for

an island-rivalry match Friday, April 22, at 6 p.m.
