Mountlake Terrace nipped the visiting Oak Harbor girls soccer team 1-0 Tuesday, Oct. 19, and possibly eliminated the Wildcats from advancing to the district tournament.

The win put the Hawks in sixth place, the final playoff spot, with 8 points and a 3-8 league record. The Wildcats have 4 points and a 1-11 record with two matches left.

Oak Harbor would have to defeat Shorewood (7-3) and Everett (8-3) to have a chance at district.

In regard to the Mountlake Terrace match, Oak Harbor coach Jeff Laiblin said, “We played great, but if you can’t score your easy opportunities, you are not going to win. We missed two easy opportunities to knock the ball into the net…Sometimes soccer is a game of inches and we were inches from a 2-1 win.”

Oak Harbor lost top offensive threat Millie Goebel early in the mach to a head-to-head collision, further hampering the Wildcats’ chances to score.

Laiblin praised the play of Brighton Pruss, Sarah Young, Chelsea Atkinson and Makenzie Schneider, who all had to make adjustment once Goebel left the match.

Laiblin liked his team’s effort: “They never quit, rallied quickly after Millie went down and played a game they should be proud of.”

Oak Harbor takes on Shorewood Monday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 at Wildcat Memorial Stadium, then travels to Everett Oct. 27.
