It’s finally official. Kelly Mauck will be the next Island County assessor.
A week-long hand recount wrapped up Friday with just a small change in a race that may be the tightest in county history. Only 11 votes separated the two candidates after the regular count of ballots. The margin changed to 12 votes after the recount.
Mauck, a Republican from Camano Island, picked up an extra three votes while T.J. Kubisiak, an Oak Harbor resident running unaffiliated, received two more ballots tallied in his favor. In the end, Mauck has 19,993 votes and Kubisiak has 19,981.
The current county assessor, Bernie Upchurch, did not run for reelection.
Mauck followed the recount closely and commended the work of the county auditor’s office and the election staff.
“It was a massive undertaking, but I think it demonstrates the accuracy of our local elections,” he said. “I knew it would be a tight race but didn’t expect it to be historic. It really is evidence that every vote counts.”
State law requires that a hand recount be conducted when a race that is not statewide has a difference of fewer than 150 votes and also less than a 0.25% difference between the votes counted for the two candidates.
Canvassing boards in Island, Skagit and Snohomish counties were due to meet Tuesday to certify the machine recounts of votes in Legislative District 10, position 1. Clyde Shavers, an Oak Harbor Democrat, is expected to retain his lead over Republican Rep. Greg Gilday, a Camano Island resident.
