First-place South Whidbey stopped the Coupeville High School soccer team 8-1 Tuesday, April 23, at Mickey Clark Field in the regular season finale.

The Wolves (3-5, 5-8) finished in third place in the North Sound Conference and now advance to the district tournament to face fifth-place Cedar Park Christian (0-7, 0-9).

Coupeville will host the first-round, loser-out contest at 6 p.m. Monday, April 29.

Since it is a district game, admission will be charged and only the front gate will be open.

If Coupeville wins, it will need to win one of its next two matches to finish in the top five at district and qualify for the bi-district tournament.

Coupeville defeated Cedar Park Christian 5-1 March 26. CPC forfeited to the Wolves April 19 when it did not have enough players during spring break.

Although the Wolves lost, coach Kyle Nelson said his team “put together plenty of good minutes.”

“South Whidbey is a good team, a tough team,” he added.

Derek Leyva tallied his 12th goal of the season for Coupeville’s one score.
