The Coupeville High School tennis team picked a good time to defeat South Whidbey.

For the first time in coach Ken Stange’s 14 years, the Wolves stopped the Falcons, winning 3-2 Wednesday, Sept. 5, in Langley.

While most of the previous losses came in non-league matches, Wednesday’s win was Coupeville’s opening match in Emerald City League play, as well as the 2018 season.

Jakobi Baumann came from behind to win the first singles match 5-7, 6-4, 10-5.

Drake Borden cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win in second singles.

Mason Grove and James Wood were 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 winners in second doubles.

Zach Ginnings and Jacob Burke fell in first doubles 6-3, 6-4; and Jaschon Baumann and Tiger Johnson were edged in third doubles 7-6(7-3), 7-5.

Coupeville plays its home opener at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, against Eastside Prep.
