Perry to play in singles semis | Tennis

Oak Harbor High School’s Makenzie Perry reached the semifinals with a win in the first day of the Western Conference 3A North tennis tournament Tuesday, May 12, at Stanwood.
The tournament will continue at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 14, after being rained out Wednesday. The top four finishers in singles and doubles will qualify for the district tournament May 19 and 20 at Arlington.
Perry, the second seed in the singles tournament, received a bye in the single-elimination first round and then defeated seventh-seeded Sierra Price of Marysville-Pilchuck 6-2, 6-3.
The Oak Harbor senior will meet Arlington’s Jacey Wreggelsworth, the third seed, in the semifinals.
The only other Wildcat to get a win in the first day of the tournament was junior AnnaBelle Whitefoot.
Whitefoot, the ninth seed, thumped eighth-seeded Riley Cunningham 6-0, 6-1 before falling to top-seeded Marina Ciferri of Marysville Getchell 6-0, 6-0.
Whitefoot will face Ferndale’s fifth-seeded Juliana Gholam in the consolation bracket.
Both Oak Harbor’s doubles teams lost in the first round and were eliminated.
Seniors Hannah Gluth and Erina Horikawa, the 12th seed, fell 6-3, 6-1 to fifth-seeded Caroline Overstreet and Emma Pountain of Everett.
Tamia Rios, the only sophomore in the tournament, and senior Alyssa Eden, the 10th seed, lost 7-6, 6-3 to seventh-seeded Bella Tift and Hannah Scarth of Arlington.
