The Coupeville High School baseball team is on a roll in the Cascade Conference.
Coming off a three-game sweep of Granite Falls last week, the Wolf Pack got seven strong innings of pitching from senior Jake Hill Wednesday afternoon to record their fourth straight Cascade Conference victory with a 10-2 win over cross-island rival South Whidbey.
Hill scattered seven hits in the game while striking out nine and his teammates played rock-solid defense behind him turning in a pair of double plays.
“My team played pretty good behind me and I was able to put the ball where I wanted it to go,” Hill said.
South Whidbey scored a run in the top of the first inning, but Coupeville answered with three runs in the bottom half on the inning and played add-on for the remainder of the game.
Coupeville scored single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings, and blew the game wide open putting four runs on the board with two out in the bottom of the fifth.
J.D. Wilcox led off with a single, stole second base and advanced to third on an infield out. Kevin Engle rapped a two-out single to score Wilcox and Alex McClain reached base on an error
With Joe Fleck running for Eaton, the Wolves tallied their second run of the inning on another Falcon error and Chase Griffin followed with a double inside the bag at third to plate two more runs.
“The guys came out real confident today and we are swinging the bats well,” coach Willie Smith said. “We played good defense behind Jake and I’m excited about the way we are playing right now.”
Wilcox and Griffin were both 2-for-2 for the Wolf Pack, that evened their season record at 5-5 in league games and 5-7 overall.
Coupeville 4, South Whidbey 2
On Thursday, the Wolves made it five straight with a 4-2 win over the Falcons on their home field.
Trailing 2-0, Coupeville erased the deficit with a three-run uprising in the top of the fifth inning.
Jason Bagby picked up the victory on the mound giving up six hits and Ian Smith was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored for Coupeville.
