The Coupeville and Oak Harbor high school football teams hit the field last week for their traditional spring camps, setting the stage for next fall’s season.

The camps will end with a scrimmage at 6 p.m. Friday, June 13, when Sedro-Woolley joins Coupeville and Oak Harbor at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

Wolves coach Tony Maggio said 30 athletes are attending the Coupeville camp.

The camp “gives our new kids time to adjust to high school football and our existing group a chance to improve their skills,” he said.

“We are just trying to get our fundamentals down and continue to improve our defense,” he added.

In Oak Harbor, coach Jay Turner welcomed 110 players.

“We install a majority of our offense and defense in the spring,” he said. “This allows us to evaluate where we are when spring ball finishes and then make adjustments for the start of fall camp.”

“We like the depth of this group,” he added. “A lot of players came into spring camp ready to complete. It’s exciting to see so many new players ready to contribute to the varsity team.”

Prior to Friday’s scrimmage, the team will hold its own intra-squad scrimmage Thursday, Turner said, for those athletes who will be absent Friday.
