Oak Harbor High School’s Yale Rosen qualified for the championship finals in three events and Coupeville’s Cole Weinstein in one at the state swim meet by finishing in the top eight in the preliminary races Friday, Feb. 18, at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

The 3A finals, which include Oak Harbor swimmers, begin at 6:30 p.m. today, Feb. 19, in Federal Way. Weinstein and the other 2A swimmers face off at 2:30.

Rosen posted the eighth best preliminary time in both the 50-yard freestyle (22.34) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.19). He and teammates Jacob Jepsen, Brandon Vagt and Josh Jepsen clocked the seventh best time in the 200 medley relay (1:42.79).

Weinstein was fifth in the 500 free (5:04.31) and 15th in the 200 free (1:56.28).

Oak Harbor was the meet’s hard-luck team, grabbing five ninth places and missing the championship finals by one slot. Those finishing ninth through 16th will compete in the consolation finals.

Jacob Jepsen took three of those ninths: 200 individual medley (2:01.67), 100 back (55.56) and 200 free relay with Ben Cardinal, Josh Jepsen and Rosen (1:32.71).

Rosen was ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.19), and Price Hu was ninth in the 100 butterfly (54.82) and 10th in the 200 IM (2:02.38).

Vagt (11th, 100 fly, 55.64) and Josh Jepsen (16th, 100 breast, 1:03.97) will also compete in the consolation finals.

Caley Powers was 18th in the 100 fly (57.37) and 22nd with Devin Schell, Vagt and Hu in the 400 free relay (3:36.09).
