Stanwood received 20 first-quarter points from Karsten Chaplik and cruised to an 86-51 win over the Oak Harbor High School boys basketball team Tuesday, Jan. 27., on the Wildcats’ court.

The victory helped the Spartans (6-0, 12-4) stay on top of the Wesco 3A North standings.

Oak Harbor (2-4, 3-13) now goes to Arlington (3-3, 11-5) to face the Eagles at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30.

Chaplik, who scored 10 consecutive points in the opening period, helped Stanwood roll to a 26-14 first-quarter lead.

Dyllan Harris attempted to keep Oak Harbor close with eight points in the period.

From that point, the Spartans’ lead hovered around 15 points until midway through the third quarter.

Stanwood led 42-29 at halftime and 67-45 after three quarters.

Harris dropped in two free throws two minutes into the second half, cutting the Stanwood led to 47-35. From there, the Spartans went on a 15-5 run and continued to pad their lead.

Both coaches emptied their bench early in the fourth period, and the Stanwood reserves outscored Oak Harbor’s 19-1.

Chaplik finished with 26 points, and the only other Spartan senior, Skout Roberson, scored 12.

The Spartans have six sophomores on their roster, and they combined to score 36 points, 20 from Chase Strieby.

“I think Stanwood moves the ball extremely well; they are very disciplined,” Oak Harbor coach John Weston said. “They wear you down until you make a mistake and then expose it. I think we broke down defensively as well. We did not follow our game plan or any in-game adjustments we made on the defensive end.”

Harris, who left the game in the third quarter, paced Oak Harbor with 19 points. Zach Jones had 14, Sean Erskine seven, Jake Sturdevant four, Diangelo McKinney three, Josh Cote two, Anthony Powell one and Ben Fikse one.

“When things started going wrong,” Weston said, “we reverted back to bad habits.”

However, Weston said his club did “a better job against them than we did the first time around.”

Stanwood defeated Oak Harbor 88-48 Jan. 9.

Tuesday, Stanwood “made a run in the last four minutes, when both of our benches were in, to extend the lead,” Weston said. “But overall, we competed better and kept it closer.”
