Only a few minor glitches with the electronic equipment and a jammed starter pistol were encountered, and everyone was in agreement that the first ever track meet held at Wildcat Memorial Stadium was a roaring success.
Athletes and coaches from Everett and Mountlake Terrace made several comments about how the facility was so well appointed and beautiful, and Thursday’s meet went so well that officials are already talking about Oak Harbor High School hosting next year’s WesCo District meet.
Even the early-April weather cooperated and outside of a somewhat gusty wind blowing at times, the rain stayed away.
Everett won both the boys and girls halves of the meet scoring 104 and 83.50 points, respectively.
Oak Harbor had a good showing with the boys scoring 53 points to finish in second place, and the girls were also second, netting 74.50 points.
Mountlake Terrace was a distant third on both score cards with 24 and 30 points.
Oak Harbor freshman Abby Leete had the honor of winning the first race at the stadium when she breezed to victory in the 3,200-meter run in a time of 12:09.67.
“It was a good race and I’m happy I won,” the freshman, who also runs cross country, said. “It was a bit rough out there running into the wind, but it was fun.”
Mietra Smollack had a big meet for the Wildcats, winning the 800- and 1,600-meters events. She was also a member of the winning 4×100 and 4×200-meter relay teams, and is the No. 2 ranked runner in the district in the 1,600.
Smollack also placed second in the javelin event.
Other members of the 4×100 relay team are Janelle Yoshimoto, Alicia Christianson, Janessa Ramos and Carson McKole.
McKole, a junior sprinter, won the 100 and 200-meter dashes, and ran the anchor legs on both relay teams.
She is the district’s top-ranked runner in the 100 meters and is second in the 200 meters, and the 4×200 relay team of Ramos, McGill, Smollack and McKole is ranked No. 1.
“I’m happy with my time and it was a good run in spite of being cold and windy,” McKole said.
Allison Duvenzez won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 50.86, and finished second to Leete in the 3,200.
Krisandra McGill rounded out the girls winners capturing the 400-meter run in a time of 1:04.63.
In the boys half of the meet, Alex Nydam won the 1,600 in a time of 4:36.80, and the 4×400 relay team of Greg Goebel, Bryce Schulle, Rashaad Smith and Donovan Hunt won the gold medal in a time of 3:40.50.
“I was hoping I could draft behind the first leader but the pace was too slow, so I took over the lead and stayed there,” Nydam said. “
Hunt was also a first-place finisher in the long jump with a leap of 27-3.
Coach Eric Peterson said he was pleased with the performances the Wildcats turned in.
“It was a good meet for us and I thought all of our athletes did well,” he said.
Oak Harbor will host another meet with Cascade and Monroe from the WesCo North providing the opposition at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17.
