Coupeville batters Vashon Island / Baseball

Deuces were wild in Coupeville High School’s 8-2 baseball win over Vashon Island Saturday, March 25, at Robert Sherman Field.

All of the runs were scored in pairs in five different innings.

Hunter Smith led the Wolves to the win. He pitched the first six innings, facing only one hitter over the minimum and allowing only one hit and one walk. He finished with nine strikeouts, and, in keeping with the theme of the game, had two K’s in four different innings.

On offense, Smith was 2-for-3 with a double, walk and four RBI.

Smith was backed by an errorless defense and received offensive help from Clay Reilly, who stroked a double and triple.

Coupeville scored twice in the first inning. Reilly’s double plated Joey Lippo, who reached on a fielder’s choice, then Jake Hoagland singled in Reilly.

In the second, Kory Score got aboard on an interference call, Matt Hilborn walked and both scored on Smith’s double.

The fourth was similar to the second. Score and Hilborn were both hit by pitches and both scored on Smith’s hit.

In the fifth, Lippo reached on an error, and Reilly followed with a triple. Reilly scored on Dan Lucero’s ground out.

Ethan Marx also doubled for the Wolves.

Vashon Island (2-3), last year’s state 1A champions, scored both its runs in the seventh.

“Our hitting was awesome,” coach Marc Aparicio said. “Our outfield, especially Jake Hoagland and Ethan Marx, was rock solid.

“We still need to work on our base running. We had three or four issues, but, overall, it was a solid game.”

Coupeville’s game at North Mason Friday, March 24, was rained out and rescheduled for Tuesday, April 11.

The Wolves (3-2) finish six straight home games with two this week. Sultan (1-2) visits at 4 p.m. Monday, March 27, then Klahowya (1-0, 1-1) comes to town at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Coupeville’s first conference game.
