Coupeville boys tennis players lost in quad-district play-in matches Monday, May 17.

Garrett Knoll and Travis Curtin lost 0-6, 4-6 in doubles to Peter King and Max Huseby from Bush.

Wolves’ coach Ken Stange said, “After a difficult first set, Travis and Garrett settled in for a battle in the second set. They put out a strong effort but were unable to overcome the consistency of the team from Bush.”

Ben Hayes was edged in singles by Seattle Academy’s Michael Chin 6-7(7-9), 7-6(7-4), 6-1.

Stange said, “Ben played fabulous tennis in the first and second sets. Up 5-3 and 30-love in the second set, Ben had his chances at closing out the match. Chin fought back, forcing a tiebreaker.”

All three Coupeville players are currently members of the soccer team and are competing in the playoffs; therefore, they had to divide their time between sports.

In Washington, schools have the choice of playing the boys tennis regular season in the fall or the spring; Coupeville, like most schools, plays in the fall. The state playoffs are in the spring.

Knoll, Curtin and Hayes qualified for the play-in matches last fall when they played their last competitive tennis.
