William Evan MacKinnon

William Evan MacKinnon, born June 24, 1966, passed away on March 18, 2010 at his home in Coupeville after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was a loving husband and devoted father, spending hours helping with homework, going on field trips, drying tears, sharing joys, driving to dance lessons and cheer competitions, dispensing “justice,” fixing cars, doing “stupid man” stuff and being an all around great dad and husband.

He enjoyed working on cars, taking computers apart and putting them back together, taking trips with his wife, Terry, and spending time with family. On top of all this, he had a wicked sense of humor and was a friend and mentor to all.

Bill began his naval career shortly after graduating from Mariner High School in Everett, Wash. He reported to Boot Camp in San Diego, attended “A” school at Millington, Tenn., and then to NAS Whidbey Island for EA-6B Prowler training. He would spend the rest of his career on Whidbey Island.

In 1986 AT3 MacKinnon reported for his first tour of duty at VAQ-129. He became an expert troubleshooter and achieved the rank of Second Class Petty Officer. He worked his way up to Chief Petty Officer in less than 10 years and on to Senior Chief. Through his work ethic and leadership qualities he gained the respect of all who worked with him and propelled his career on to becoming Master Chief Petty Officer.

For Over 24 years Bill Mackinnon served his country and his fellow sailors. When he joined the Navy, he was quoted as saying “I want to be a Master Chief and BE somebody.” He achieved that goal with distinction. During his career he was awarded numerous medals, citations, letters of commendation and appreciation.

William is survived by his wife, Terry; daughters, Christina Mitchell and Catherine Mitchell; son, Garrick MacKinnon; mother, Margaret MacKinnon; brothers, Donald MacKinnon (Doreen) and John MacKinnon (Melanie Youhanna); sister, Mary Reed (Jim); and nephews Erik Olson (Marie), Ethan Olson and JohnWilliam MacKinnon. He was preceded in death by his father, John MacKinnon, and sister, Kathleen Olson.

Funeral services were held at NAS Whidbey Base Chapel on March 26, followed by interment and full military honors at Sunnyside Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel.
