Thelma Mae McClelland, 84, of Oak Harbor, died Sept. 8, 2009, at Careage of Whidbey.
Mrs. McClelland was born in Providence, R.I., on Nov. 2, 1924, to Herbert and Ethel (Reynolds) Jenkins. Thelma moved frequently with her family, as her father was a bridge builder and transferred from project to project as needed. The family eventually settled in Modesto, Calif., where Thelma attended high school. She married Elwyn McClelland on Feb. 20, 1943 in Reno, Nev. Thelma was employed as a bookkeeper.
The couple moved to a ranch at Pleasant Grove, Calif., residing there until the 1970s at which time they moved to Yuba City, Calif. Thelma and Elwyn enjoyed traveling with their travel trailer and going to ‘49er games. She was a 50-plus year member of the Order of Eastern Star and was active in assisting with Rainbow Girls. She came to Whidbey Island in 2001, after Elwyn passed away.
Thelma is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Roger Pierce of Oak Harbor; and two sons, David McClelland of Dobbins, Calif., and Brian McClelland of Yuba City; three grandchildren, Douglas Pierce (Roni) of Sedro-Woolley, Kevin Pierce of Anacortes and Brian McClelland of Yuba City; and three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Cora and Erin Pierce.
Services will take place in Pleasant Grove, Calif., on Saturday, Sept. 12. Memorials are suggested to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Skagit County, 160 Cascade Pl., Burlington, WA 98233.
