Robert K. Shafer

Robert Keith Shafer died at home surrounded by his family and close friends on March 1, 2011. He was born in 1923 in Norton, Kan. During the Depression he and his family moved west looking for work usually as migrant workers, finally settling in the small town of Gleed, Wash.

Robert volunteered for the Army First Special Service Force during World War II and fought in Italy. His regiment became known as the “Black Devils.” In 1952 Robert married his wife Betty and moved to California where he earned a degree in education and later a masters in administration. He was a special education teacher for many years before becoming the coordinator of special education for the Escondido Union School District.

After retiring he and Betty moved to Whidbey Island and have remained in Coupeville since. Bob enjoyed camping, hiking, fishing, sailing and playing cards.

He will be missed greatly by his wife Betty, son Tom Shafer of Denver, daughter Julie Landau, son-in-law Noah Landau and grandsons Sam and Jack Landau of Coupeville. He was predeceased by his son, John Shafer. His favorite charities were Gifts from the Heart in Coupeville and Habitat for Humanity.

A memorial celebrating his life will be held at the Coupeville Methodist Church on Saturday, March 19, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jin Ming Ma officiating. Full military honors will follow under the auspices of the U.S. Army Honor Guard.
