Robert G. McCarty

Robert G. McCarty, 88, of Coupeville, passed away April 29, 2009, in Seattle. He was born May 18, 1920, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Robert E. and Mary T. (Sanger) McCarty.

After serving as a glider mechanic in the United States Army during World War II, Rob was honorably discharged on Sept. 9, 1945. He returned to Minneapolis and worked as a streetcar driver. He also spent time farming in Walker, Minn., was a coxswain on a boat on Leech Lake, Minn., and worked as an equipment operator in the iron mines in Duluth, Minn.

In 1954, Rob moved his family to Arlington, Wash., where he began work for the City of Seattle in the engineering department. He worked as the inspector on the Tolt River Project, along with many other projects through the years. He retired in 1976 from his position as supervisor at the Fremont Transfer Station.

On Sept. 26, 1970, Robert married Anna Bustard in Bothell.

After his retirement, Rob and Anne enjoyed traveling around the country in their motor home. They spent their winters in Quartzsite, Ariz. Anne passed away on Oct. 5, 1989.

Rob also volunteered for 10 years for Senior Services, driving people to doctor’s appointments, the grocery store, or wherever they needed to go in the Seattle area.

Rob was active in the American Legion, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Coupeville, and the Knights of Columbus. He stayed busy with his activities, but most of all, he enjoyed being a grandpa and great-grandpa.

Survivors include his sister Phyllis Dettler of Burien; daughter Donna L. McCarty of Lynnwood; grandchildren Keith Broden, Kari Brown, G. Tyler Smith, and Jeffrey Smith; great-grandchildren Thomas Broden, Kyle Brown, David Broden, Kelsie Brown, Melissa Broden, and Kramer Brown.

Preceding Robert in death are his parents, wife Anna, step-son William R. Bustard, and brothers Burton and Murton McCarty.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon Friday, May 8, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Coupeville. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s just prior to Mass. Interment will be in Sunnyside Cemetery in Coupeville. A reception for friends and family will follow.
