Robert E. “Bob” King, age 92, died suddenly on Feb. 19, 2011, at Harborview Medical Center, Seattle, following an accident at his home in Oak Harbor. He was born Aug. 19, 1918, in Seattle to Irval F. and Bernice (MacTaggart) King.

Bob grew up in Seattle and graduated from Roosevelt high School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in both World War II and Korea. He retired in 1959 as an ATC with over 20 years of service.

Following his military career, Bob worked for a short time for the city of Oak Harbor as a police dispatcher and then began a second career with NAS Whidbey Island. He retired from the Cal Lab.

Bob was a member of the Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church, Oak Harbor Elks Lodge 2362, and the PBY FMA Association. He was also a member of the Whidby Island Lodge 15, F&AM and was also a Past Master and Past District Deputy.

Bob was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He also was a skilled woodworker. For many years he traveled south to warmer climates as a snowbird.

Bob is survived by his longtime companion, Jane Hoffman; four children, Cindy and Howell Curran of Manassas, Va., Susan and Kevin Fahey of Eugene, Ore., Karl Hoffman and Donny Johnson of Mount Vernon, Wash., and Cheryl and Keith Dyson of Graham, Wash; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; as well as seven nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services for Robert King will be held at Maple Leaf Cemetery on Friday, March 4, at 11 a.m. with the Whidby Island Lodge 15 officiating. Full military honors will follow under the NAS Whidbey Island Honor Guard and the Washington State National Guard. Memorial services will follow at the Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dave Johnson officiating.
