Richard A. Zick

Capt. Richard A. Zick passed away of heart related illnesses on March 25, 2011. He was born in Aberdeen, S.D. on Oct. 17, 1930, son of George and Alvina Zick.

He attended South Dakota State University and graduated from Old Dominion University. Capt. Zick was commissioned in 1953 and assigned to Attack Squadron 115, flying the Douglas A-1 Skyraider. Subsequent tours included Instructor at Advanced Training Command, Beeville, Texas; Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, Calif.; Naval War College, Newport, R.I.; Heavy Attack Squadron 2 aboard the USS Coral Sea; Fleet Air Reconnaissance One at Atsugi, Japan.

Capt. Zick’s commands were Attack Squadron 165, flying the A-6 Intruder; Air Boss on the USS Independence; Commanding Officer of VA-42; Lant Fleet A-6 RAG Squadron, and Commander Medium Attack Wing One; Training Air Wing One, Meridian, Miss.

He also served as Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff, Logistics Readiness for Command in Chief US Atlantic Fleet, finishing out his career as Chief of Staff at COMMATVAQWINGPAC.

Dick retired from the Navy in 1980. He is survived by his loving family including wife Nancy, daughters Betsy and Barbara, and granddaughters Katie and Maggie. Dick will also be missed by his surviving sisters Jeanette and Lucille and all his nieces and nephews.
