Phosa Marie Grotzke

Marie Grotzke, age 80, longtime Oak Harbor resident, passed away at Whidbey General Hospital on Saturday, Feb. 13, following a brief illness.

Mrs. Grotzke was born in Malad City, Idaho, on June 10, 1929, to Edward and Irita (Larsen) Smith. She was raised in Athol, Idaho, near Lake Pend Orielle, and graduated from high school there. She was wed for over 50 years to Howard F. Grotzke, whom she married following high school. The couple lived in Spokane, and then Guam, before coming to Oak Harbor in 1965.

Marie was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed golf, basketball and sewing. She was passionate about being a grandmother and great-grandmother.

Marie is survived by her son Gary Grotzke (Sue) of Sedro-Woolley and her daughter Shannon Del Ciello (Dan) of Oak Harbor; 12 grandchildren: Deborah, Jean, Michael, Karl, Kylie, Nichole, Brent, Erik, Jeffery, Kirk, Stephanie and Sarah; nine great-grandchildren: Breanna, Alisia, Katelynn, Libyrtie, Daniel, Lilly, Rebecca, Grant and Lucy; two brothers, Bart Smith (Beverly) and Arvel Smith, both of Post Falls, Idaho; also, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. She is also survived by her good friend, Al Crocker. She was preceded in death by her husband Howard, her son Ronald and by three brothers, Odell, Burnett and Darrell Smith.
