Mildred Louise ‘Millie’ Flynn

Mildred Louise “Millie” Flynn, age 84, died at her home in Greenbank with her family by her side, on June 26, 2007, following a lengthy illness. Born in Harrison, Ark. to Lilbert and Clara (Fife) Griffin, Millie was raised in Searcy, Ark. She and two brothers and four sisters were raised on the families sharecrop farm.

Millie’s first job away from the farm was at the Little Rock Arsenal as a powder worker in the assembly of bomb and torpedo fuses. When WWII began, Millie moved to Oakland, Calif., where she worked for a time as a welder in the shipyards. She left the shipyards and enlisted in the Women’s Army Air Corps. She left the Air Corps in 1945 and moved to Denver, Colo. later moved to Merced, Calif.

In Merced, Millie worked as a carhop at Michael’s drive-in and later for Gallagher’s Cleaners as a cashier. On August 16, 1955, she married Denny Flynn in Reno, Nev. Denny worked for Bell Telephone and was a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Millie loved to bowl and was a member of the Bell Telephone Company team for many years.

In 1965, Denny was transferred to North Bend, Wash. Millie soon became active in the community. She served as a Den Mother to the Cub Scouts for several years and was an active soccer mom. Because of Denny’s military activity, she was often the only parent at home.

Millie was a member of the North Bend Moose Lodge, serving as Senior Regent. She also had a cleaning business and worked at the Moose Lodge, serving meals and as a cashier for Ken’s Truck Town. She bowled in several leagues. Denny retired from AT&T in 1989 and continued to fly with the Air Force Reserve. Millie continued as a military spouse until 1993 when Denny retired from the Air Force. Millie and Denny then sold their home in North Bend and moved to Whidbey Island in 1996.

They had an RV and boat and for many years traveled to the North end of Vancouver Island with five couples from California each year. They would spend a month fishing and visiting, and each year Millie caught the first fish and the biggest fish. Millie enjoyed her home on Whidbey very much and loved the birds, ducks, eagles and geese. She enjoyed working with her flowers, but most of all she loved being with her family. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Millie is survived by her husband, Denny at the family home and by five children: Larry Boyer (Kristen) of Duvall, Wash.; Elaine Jones (Gary) of Arvada, Colo.; Denny L. Flynn II of Woodinville, Wash.; Donald Flynn (Toni) of Carnation, Wash.; and Patrick Flynn (April Pattie) of Freeland, Wash. Her parents and two brothers, Robert and Griff Griffin preceded her in death. Ruby Griffin, Griff’s surviving wife, resides in Lakewood, Colo.
