Maartje “Mia” Eigenraam, 98, of Oak Harbor, passed away on April 12, 2011, at Regency on Whidbey Assisted Living.
Mrs. Eigenraam was born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, on Feb. 13, 1913, to Jan and Lena (van Veelen) Van der Pols. She was married to Johannes Eigenraam. The family moved from Rotterdam around the time of the bombing of the city in 1940 to Dordrecht, Holland. The Eigenraams participated in hiding Jewish families during the Nazi occupation.
In 1947, they immigrated to the United States, settling for a time in New Britain, Conn., and then in Greenwich, Conn., where they lived until August 2006. At that time, Mia moved to Oak Harbor to be near her son. She enjoyed knitting and sewing.
Mia is survived by her son Dick Eigenraam (Linda) of Oak Harbor; two grandchildren, Jeff Eigenraam (Diane) of Edmonds and Cara McDonald (Bill) of Bellevue; and four great-grandchildren, Jake and Josh Eigenraam and William and Mia McDonald. She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1973 and by a son John in 2004, as well as by her seven siblings.
In keeping with her wishes, no services will be held. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 728 – 134th St. SW, Suite 101, Everett, WA 98204. Arrangements are with the assistance of Whidbey Memorial.
