Joyce Arlene Willoughby

Joyce Arlene Willoughby died suddenly at Whidbey General Hospital on Dec. 8, 2008, at the age of 74. She was born May 3, 1934, in Portland, Ore. Joyce moved to Washington with her mother and attended Catholic primary schools. She graduated from Ballard High School in 1953.

Following graduation, Joyce worked for Seattle City Light and also for Boeing for a time. While in Seattle, Joyce met John L. Willoughby, a young sailor. They were married Aug. 12, 1966, in Washington, D.C. They returned to Ballard and then spent four years in Virginia. They moved on to Brookings, Ore., Portland, and finally back to NAS Whidbey Island for John’s final tour.

Joyce was a long-time member of the Oak Harbor Southern Baptist Church. She enjoyed macrame, camping and her grandchildren.

Joyce is survived by her husband John Willoughby and her children: Ruby Ingram, Linda Shinazawa, Debbie Rowley (Kenny) all of Florida, Skip Willoughby (Sarah) of Virginia, Lori Gustafson of Covington, Wash., and Donna McDaniel (Colin) of Port Orchard; brothers and sisters, Eugene Johnsen of California, John Johnsen of Shelton and Anita Goodman and Mary Hazelwood, both of Moses Lake; her grandchildren, Tonya, M.J., Aaron, Asher, Taylor, Jamie, Nicole, Brittany, CeCe, Akira, Jade, Josh, Mya, Stephanie, Josh, Zak, Nicolas, Alissa, Ashley, Sami and Sean; and great-grandchildren, Dustin, Jetta and Logan.

Memorial services were held Dec. 13 at the Oak Harbor Southern Baptist Church with Pastor Grafton Robinson officiating. Cremation was held under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
