John H. Schwenker

John H. Schwenker, age 71 of Coupeville died Tuesday, June 8, 2010, in Coupeville. He was born on September 7, 1938, in Wichita, Kan., to Henry and Kathryn (Gaffney) Schwenker. In 1964, John joined the United States Navy, serving a total of 30 years before retiring as a Radioman Master Chief, RMCM (E-9). While stationed in the Philippines during his time in the Navy, John met Zenaida “Zeny” Fabros, marrying her on September 7, 1985.

During his time in the Navy, John attended college, first earning a Bachelor’s Degree, and then his Master’s Degree in Human Resources Management from Pepperdine University.

After leaving the Navy, John and Zeny settled in Oak Harbor. He worked for four years as a jailer and dispatcher with the Island County Sheriff’s Office in Coupeville.

John was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Coupeville. He enjoyed competitive shooting, guns and knives, and stories of the Wild Wild West. He enjoyed being with his friends and family and driving around Whidbey enjoying the scenery. He loved being near the water.

John is survived by his wife Zeny of Coupeville; children Seth and wife Heidi Schwenker of Port Angles; Denise Brewer of Aberdeen; Shannon Stephenson of Carlsbad, N.M.; Jennie Schwenker of Bothell; Cassie Schwenker at home in Coupeville; Sara Gibson of Texas; sister Ann Kathryn Schwenker of Wichita; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and cousin Pat Bertolino of Reno. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Cindy Barnhardt and daughter Darlene Schwenker.

A funeral service was held for John Schwenker on Saturday, June 12, 2010, at 3 p.m. at Burley Funeral Chapel in Oak Harbor, with Deacon Larry Jesmer as Celebrant. Visitation was held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the funeral. Graveside committal prayers followed at Sunnyside Cemetery in Coupeville.
