James Richard Scriven

James (Jim) Richard Scriven passed away in Arizona on Sunday, May 8, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Georgia E. Scriven, his daughters and sons-in-law, Georgianne and Mike Poynter and Jeri Scriven and Kurt Helley; his grandchildren. Deaven M.E. Poynter, Tanya Scriven, Marcel (Mick) Poynter, and Colton Clements; his mother Louise Scriven; and brothers Dick, Tim, and Donny, as well as many sisters-and-brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Jack Scriven and granddaughter Hailey Jolene.

He had a multitude of lifelong friends and each of you meant the world to him.

He was born in Coupeville and graduated from Langley High School in 1961. Jim and Georgia eloped to California and were married, a marriage which lasted for almost 48 years. He entered into the apprentice program to become a carpenter and became a foreman for a commercial building company.

In 1968, they moved with their two daughters back to Whidbey Island where he went into business. He opened Jim’s Construction, then House Moving and then finally Whidbey Topsoil. He sold this business and retired in 2008. He and Georgia had bought a home in Yuma, Ariz., in 2002, and they became “snow birds.” During this time he fought a battle against cancer and won.

He enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cards and having barbecues with family and friends. He enjoyed spending his Sundays with his mom watching sports events. He enjoyed and supported his grandchildrens’ many endeavors most of all. The important things in his life were “his family,” “his freinds,” the Good Lord above and doing the right thing. If you didn’t want to hear the truth or at least his opinion of it, you just didn’t ask him the question. If you had a large crowd and tried to find him all you had to do was listen for his laugh. I know this “little sister” will be missing that laugh of his. With love Jimbo and “Big Squeezies.”

A Memorial Service will be held at Assembly of God Church on Langley Road at 2 p.m. Friday, July 1. A celebration of his life will follow the service and is being held at the American Legion Hall.
