Harry Wilhorn

Harry Franklin “Tiny” Wilhorn, 83, of Coupeville, died at Careage of Whidbey on Sept. 27, 2005.

Mr. Wilhorn was born May 16, 1922, in Spokane, to Charles Washburn and Bessie (Tesch) Washburn. He was adopted by Frank Wilhorn and was raised in Oregon City, Ore., where he graduated from high school. After graduation, he entered the US Marine Corps, and served during World War II in the South Pacific, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Conflict. Tiny was exposed to the atomic bomb blasts during testing in the Nevada desert. He retired from the Marine Corps in October 1967 as a Gunnery Sergeant. He was married to Phyllis E. Swanson on Oct. 12, 1979.

Tiny was a member of the Whidby Island Lodge No. 15, F&AM; was Past High Priest of Royal Arch; a Life Member of Fleet Reserve Post 88 in Vista, Calif.; and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of San de Fuca Chapel.

Tiny loved fishing, camping and bowling. He was an ardent fan of the Mariners and Padres and loved to play golf.

Tiny is survived by his wife Phyllis, at home; his adopted children, Donna Roberts of Spokane and John Wilhorn and wife Maggie of Cresse City, Calif,; one son, James Wilhorn and wife Connie of Inyokern, Calif.; two step-daughters, Lisa Heffernan and husband Joey and Dawna Underwood, all of Louisville, Ky.; eight grandchildren, Thomas Wilhorn and fiance Kendra of Silverdale, John Franklin Wilhorn of York, Neb.; James Wilhorn of Inyokern, Calif.; Joseph Wilhorn of Cresse City, Calif.; Carol Roberts, Paul Roberts and wife Georgia and Jeff Roberts, all of Spokane; David Roberts; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; nephew Tom Fender and wife Diane of Portland, Ore.; also, cousin Harry and wife Cilia Tesen of Spokane. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dorothy Fender and step-son David Underwood.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2 p.m. at the Whidby Lodge No. 15 F & AM in Coupeville. A graveside service will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery, Pastor Cliff Horr officiating, with Military Honors by the US Marine Corps Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
