Harold (Kye) Roth

Harold (Kye) Roth, of Oak Harbor, formerly of Everett, died at Home Place on July 5, 2009. Kye was born Aug. 30, 1909, in Walla Walla, to Jacob and Katherine Magdalena (Hill) Roth. Kye’s parents and several of the nine brothers and sisters were born in a German Lutheran Community in the Sarotov area on the Volga River, in Russia.

In 1931 Kye was married to Mary (Gaylord) Roth in Wenatchee, where they lived until 1946 as he continued his career as a baker in a small “hands on” bakery.

With a brief trial at ranching/logging/farming in northwestern Montana town of Yaak, he returned to a small bakery in Yakima, until 1960. They retired to be assistant managers of Whistlin’ Jack Resort, Chinook Pass Highway, until the late ‘60s. They moved to Hemet, Calif., to try the climate, and worked as assistant managers of an RV/trailer park until 1971, when they moved to Whidbey Island as caretakers of property near Coupeville. It was there that Kye continued his volunteer work until 1982, when they moved to south Everett. Mary passed away in 2004 and Kye remained there and continued volunteer activity until 2006. He moved to an assisted living facility in Oak Harbor, Harbor Towers, and then with increased care needs to Home Place.

He is survived by one son and his wife, Don and Janet Roth of Coupeville; and four grandchildren, Barbara Ann Roth, David Lee Roth and wife Sandy, Kathleen Jo and husband Jeff Nelson, and Steven Duane Roth; also, five great-grandchildren, Jason and Amy Nelson, Donald and Sarah Roth and Stefanie Roth.

A brief graveside ceremony is planned Tuesday, July 14 at 11 a.m. at Sunnyside Cemetery, Rev. Jin Ming Ma of Coupeville United Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements and cremation directed by Whidbey Memorial.
