Frieda Grace Wezeman

Frieda Wezeman was born April 20, 1922, in Grand Rapids, Mich., and died Feb. 8, 2011, at Careage on Whidbey in Coupeville at the age of 87. She grew up on a farm in Michigan and graduated from Hope College in Holland, Mich.

After graduating she married Rev. Leonard Wezeman and they began ministering to churches in Michigan and California. She moved to Whidbey Island with her husband and family to serve as pastor’s wife at First Reformed Church. She was an accomplished musician and played piano and organ for 60 years. She taught special education and second grade in Oak Harbor schools, retiring in 1987.

Frieda was an avid reader all her life and traveled to 75 different countries. She loved gardening and did her own yard work well into her 70s. She loved ballroom dancing and giving piano concerts at schools and churches.

Frieda is survived by her children, Paul (Leah), Peter, Tim (Nancy), and Lois (Bill); grandchildren, Peter Aaron, Josh, Scott, Luke (Cara), Jamie, Wendy (Josh), and Brian; and her great-grandchildren, Jackson, Emma, and Judah.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, in 1967 and her grandson, Wyatt, in 1996.

A memorial service for Frieda will be held Saturday, Feb. 12, at the First Reformed Church at 10 a.m. She has requested that memorial gifts be made to the First Reformed Church music fund.
