Frances Price Husted

Frances Price Husted passed away on June 1, 2011, in Oak Harbor at the age of 87. Frances was born Frances Elizabeth Scott, Nov. 4, 1923, in Bandera, Texas, to Leta D. and Marcus J. Scott. The Scotts were Southern Baptist ministers in China in the early 1920s but returned to Texas in 1923. Frances moved around several places in Texas as her parents were teachers and her father a minister. Frances graduated high school in 1938 and at the age of 14. She was enrolled in Baylor University; at that time the youngest female to ever enroll.

When World War II started she quit college and worked for the Army in San Antonio, Texas, where she met Lt. Homer I. Price whom she wed in January 1943. Homer and Fran had three children; Homer I. Jr. (Jay), Patricia Elizabeth and Larry Victor. While in the Army, Homer and Fran were stationed several places in the U.S. and in Japan.

Homer and Fran moved to South Whidbey in 1959 after Homer retired from the Army. Homer joined the Bureau of Indian Affairs and they moved to Everett in 1963 and later Hoquiam. Later they moved to North Dakota, then South Dakota. Homer was injured in the Second Battle of Wounded Knee and retired to Oak Harbor on disability in 1973.

Fran was active in the Oak Harbor Garden Club for many years and the American Legion Auxiliary. In 1985 Homer and Fran moved to Honolulu where Homer died in 1987.

In 1990 Fran married Richard C. Husted from Coupeville, whom she and Homer had know for many years. They split their time between Honolulu, San Antonio and visiting in the Northwest. Richard died in San Antonio in 2004. Fran then moved to Sagle, Idaho, to live with her son Jay and his wife Bonnie. She moved back to Oak Harbor in February 2007 and lived at Regency on Whidbey. In November 2010 she moved to Harbor Care due to deteriorating health. Fran’s hobbies were gardening, photography, reading, and traveling.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands Homer and Richard and her oldest son Jay.

She is survived by her daughter Patricia Ays (Richard) of Oak Harbor; son Larry Price of Seattle; daughter-in-law Bonnie Price of Spokane; two step-sons, Gregary Husted (Arlana) of Las Vegas and James Husted (Marilyn) of Seattle; and two grandsons, Vincent I. Price (Ali) of Spokane and Marcus Hays (Erika) of Bellingham.

Frances’ ashes will be placed with her husband Richard’s ashes at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) in Honolulu, at a later date. There will be no local services. Remembrances can be made to the National Alzheimer’s Association.
