Edith Kathleen Clarke

Edith Kathleen Clarke, 80, of Oak Harbor, passed away at her home on Feb. 8, 2011, following a lengthy illness, with family by her side.

Mrs. Clarke was born Jan. 17, 1931, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Charles and Alice (Wilson) Minty. She was raised primarily in Lethbridge, Alberta, where she graduated from high school. She married Nick Haydychuk, Jr., on Jan. 20, 1950. They resided in Lethbridge, where they raised their four children Nick, Dennis, Shannon and Kelly.

On Nov. 2, 1968, she married Douglas Joseph Clarke. They moved to Cranbrook and Surrey, B.C., before immigrating to Washington state, where they have lived for the past 40 years. This union was blessed with two children, Gina and Joseph. They moved to Oak Harbor in 2005.

Edith had been employed in a variety of endeavors, most prominently as a milk inspector for a dairy. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church. She was also a past member of the Moose Lodge and was Past Noble Grand of the Oak Leaf Rebekah Lodge. Edith was a volunteer for the Food Bank and a member of the Oak Harbor Senior Center.

Edith is survived by her husband Douglas Clarke at home; three daughters, Gina Bowen of Astoria, Ore., Kelly Burt (Paul) of Oak Harbor, and Shannon Maystruck (Lyle) of Regina, Saskatchewan; two sons, Nick Hayes and Joseph Clarke, both of Lethbridge, Alberta; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank Minty (Margaret) of Nanaimo, B.C.; also, numerous other relatives. She was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Haydychuk (1981), a sister, Helen Sheets (2005); her mother, Alice Minty Gore-Hickman (2007) and her father, Charles Minty (1975).

A Memorial Service will be Saturday, Feb. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Bible Baptist Church, 1701 Harns Rd., Oak Harbor, Pastor Robert Sargent officiating.
