Dorothy Irene Pinney

Dorothy was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. We were so blessed and fortunate to be members of Dorothy’s family as she had a tremendous zest for life, a great attitude and was always an optimistic and positive person. She was always game to try something new, much to the delight of her children and grandchildren.

On Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, Dorothy peacefully lost her long battle with cancer.

Dorothy was born July 27, 1923, in Wakefield, Mich., to Jenny and Frank Deacon and moved to Seattle as a very young girl. Upon graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1940, she helped with the war efforts. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Raymon E. Pinney, while bicycle riding at Greenlake. At the conclusion of the war they were married on Oct. 31, 1945 in Alameda, Calif., and moved back to Seattle. In 1947, they moved to Shoreline and built their first house and started a family. In 1981, upon Dorothy’s retirement from the Census Bureau, they converted their Whidbey Island summer cabin to a full-time residence. In 2006, Dorothy moved to Lake City and ultimately settled in at an assisted living home, Stratford at Mapleleaf. Stratford did an excellent job of caring for Dorothy and her family is very thankful for all the support and help provided by the nice people at Stratford.

She and her husband, Ray, enjoyed a full life of family, friends and travel. In their earlier days, they boated, camped and fished with friends and family and made the best smoked salmon and banana cream pie. They were members of the Useless Bay Golf Club, with Dorothy being a member of the Women’s 9 Hole Group for many years. Dorothy was active in various Children’s Hospital women’s guilds. Winters were frequently spent as “snowbirds” in Arizona or California. Although oil painting was her favorite hobby, Dorothy was also a gardener, copious reader and dedicated “feeder” of the beach crows and sea gulls.

She leaves behind two sons and their families: Ray and his wife, Pamela, and their two sons ,Raymon and Darren; and Dale and his wife Karin, and their two children, Lauren and Logan.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Raymon E. Pinney on Aug. 19, 2005, and her brother Robert Deacon. She is survived by her sister, Ruth Britch, in Anchorage, Alaska.
