Dorothy Glasscock

Dorothy Glasscock, 83, of Oak Harbor, longtime former resident of Scotts Mills, Ore., died at her home April 10, 2004.

Mrs. Glasscock was the youngest of two daughters born to Eugene Clair Rowlett and LaDema (Wiar) Rowlett in Oklahoma City, Okla., May 28, 1920. Dorothy lived in Oklahoma until the years of the Great Depression. She, her mother, step-father and sister moved to California in 1932. Dorothy was able to find work in California during the years of World War II. She met Robert Glasscock in 1938 and they married in 1946. Their only child, a daughter Gaylene, was born in 1947.

As the wife of a military officer, Dorothy focused on providing a nurturing home for her family. The family moved from coast to coast many times until 1959, when Dorothy and Robert fulfilled a dream to buy land and a house in Scotts Mills, Ore.

Cultivating community with her cousins in Oregon and using her considerable artistic abilities to help Robert transform the Scotts Mills property into a unique and beautiful home and estate, Dorothy, Robert and Gaylene blossomed in the joys of domestic life. Dorothy was devoted to caring for her mother and sister when they faced declining health, but she and Robert also took time to travel in their RV when they could get away.

After Gaylene’s marriage to Robert Reiten in 1968, Dorothy and Robert offered their home to several couples who stayed in the home as house sitters when Dorothy and Robert were away. Dorothy used her energy and creativity to listen to her loved ones and to make gifts for them with her hands. Her grandchildren Karena and Andrew were beloved and treasured.

In 1997 Dorothy and Robert moved to Oak Harbor, to live closer to their daughter’s family. When Dorothy’s health began to decline, Comfort Keepers and Home Health Hospice of Island County helped Gaylene and Robert care for Dorothy at home. Dorothy died peacefully in the arms of her family. She will always live in our hearts as we celebrate her life.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 17, at 1 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery, Scotts Mills, Ore.
