Our beloved mother, Doris G. Smollack, longtime resident of Oak Harbor, left us to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 18, 2010 surrounded by her family.
Doris was 86, born Sept. 25, 1923 in Anaconda, Mont., as the middle child of Thomas F. and Mary E. Ryan. After graduating from high school in Anaconda, Doris attended the University of Montana and Washington State (College) University, majoring in Home Economics. She was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority and the head drum majorette for both universities. One of her fondest memories was leading her college band in the Pasadena Rose Parade, as she was an exceptional acrobat, baton twirler, and dancer.
Doris and her husband, Dr. Stephen W. Smollack, moved to Oak Harbor in 1989 to be closer to their Family. Doris was a gourmet cook, enjoyed the outdoors, an avid golfer, an interior decorator, and a devout Catholic, most recently a member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Oak Harbor. Her primary joy in life was raising, guiding, and enjoying to the fullest, her three children and grandchildren.
Doris is survived by her three children and their families: daughter Janet Liharik and husband Miroslav and granddaughter Angelica, all of Portland, Ore.; son Stephen Smollack and wife Della and granddaughters Keely and Mietra, all of Oak Harbor; and daughter Marilee Paddock and husband AJ and granddaughters Sheena Paddock and Stephanie Swinney (expecting) and husband Billy, all of Oak Harbor.
Her elder sister Helen M. Sullivan and husband William of Piedmont, Calif., nieces Larisse and Mary Alice and their families and nephews Joseph Sullivan and family, all of Oakland, Calif., and Joel K. Ryan of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, also survive.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Stephen W. Smollack, brother Thomas K. Ryan, sister Marjorie Ryan and parents Thomas F. and Mary E. Ryan.
The Holy Rosary was prayed July 21 at St. Augustine’s Church. Funeral Mass was celebrated July 22 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, with Rev. Jerry Kienzle as Celebrant. Graveside Prayers of Committal followed at Maple Leaf Cemetery, with a reception for family and friends following at the Parish Hall. Memorial contributions in Doris’s name may be made to St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 185 N. Oak Harbor St., Oak Harbor, WA 98277.
Arrangements entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
