Doris B. “Dee” Carter

Dee Carter passed away April 8, 2011, in Olympia. She was born Aug. 6, 1920, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Edward and Olive Starry Abram. She attended high school and business college in Cleveland. Dee married U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Warren Carter on Feb. 11, 1956, in Escondido, Calif., and together they raised their daughter, Nina Lee Carter, who was born in the Philippine Islands.

Dee enjoyed traveling and living in new places, including New York; Los Angeles; Philippine Islands; Lucern, Switzerland; Tripoli, Libya; Coupeville; and Olympia. While her family was in the military, they also traveled to Hong Kong, Japan and almost every European country. Upon returning to Los Angeles in the 1970s, Dee worked as an executive office manager in women’s clothing and better sportswear sales. After retirement, she and Warren moved to Coupeville to care for his mother, and then on to Olympia.

Dee loved gardening (member of the Oak Harbor Gardening Club), nature, parks, playing bridge, caring for animals, listening to choral music, piano, art, theater and having a good cup of coffee.

She is survived by her husband, Warren; and daughter, Nina Carter and son-in-law, Thomas B. Rainey. She was preceded in death by her mother, Olive Starry; father, Edward Abram; and sister, Lillian Adams.

Services will be announced at a later time. Inurnment will be at Sunnyside Cemetery, Ebey’s Prairie, Coupeville.
