Devera L. Barney

Devera L. Barney, 55, passed away Feb. 25, 2008, at her Oak Harbor home. Born Nov. 16, 1952 to Leonard and Reva Meyer, Devera grew up in Stockton, Calif. After graduation from Schneider Vocational High School and gaining her beautician’s license, Devera worked for many years while building a family. The marriage failed just in time for her to meet and marry the true love of her life.

On April 25, 1981, Devera became the wife, best friend, and eternal partner of Allen Barney. Devera and Allen pursued their life together with great joy and happiness as they moved to each location Allen’s service in the Navy took them.

Devera and Allen enjoyed many wonderful years serving the Lord and holding key leadership positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in each ward they belonged to. Devera found her happiest moments working with the sweet spirits of the primary children and young women. Her most challenging calling was as a Relief Society president because she said teaching adults scared her.

Devera worked for American Greetings as a merchandiser for 13 years. She accepted a job as file clerk/receptionist for Lee Roof, M.D., at Whidbey Island Internal Medicine, where she happily worked until her illness forced her to stop. She was the proud parent of four wonderful children.

Devera was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Reva Meyer.

She is survived by her husband, Allen Barney of Oak Harbor; daughter Selley of Stockton, Calif., son Albert of Oak Harbor, daughter Brandi of Burlington, son Joseph of Oak Harbor; three brothers, Dennis Meyer of Stockton, Gary Meyer of St. George, Utah, and Brent Meyer of Galt, Calif.; nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, and hundreds of friends who loved and adored her.

A memorial service was held Feb. 29 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Oak Harbor. Devera will be laid to rest at the Cherokee Cemetery in Lodi, Calif., near her parents and other family members. Arrangements by Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
