Alice (Boyer) Schattauer

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Alice (Boyer) Schattauer, 92, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Mo., on July 12, 2009.

Alice was born Oct. 13, 1916, raised in Coupeville and educated as a registered nurse. She moved to the Hawaiian Islands in 1939 and was an Army nurse at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

Following her military service, she was active in public health in Hawaii for many years.

She married Fred Schattauer (died 2002) on Molokai in 1942 and they remained married for 60 years. Their retirement home was in Captain Cook, Hawaii. For the final two years of her life, Alice received loving care at The Manor at Elfindale in Springfield.

She is survived by son Fred and wife Melanie of Springfield; daughter Elizabeth of Louisville, Ky.; and daughter Susan of Honokaa, Hawaii, as well as four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Freeman Boyer, of Coupeville.

As she wished, she will be cremated and her ashes spread at sea off the island of Hawaii, at a date to be determined.
